Hello Everyone, I hope you're having a great summer! I can't believe it's almost over already! It has been sweltering hot here in Southern California, but the beautiful beaches are never too far away...who am I kidding-we went like...once. No, seriously, it's like that. Sigh. But I did get to go to Costa Rica! That was AH-MAZZZZING! Also very hot and humid (OMG hiking in Costa Rica....I thought I'd die!)...but nature was sooo..."extra" there....it's just eye candy everywhere you look, and the papaya...yummmm! I didn't want to leave! And yes, my spoiled inner child still cried, whined, and threw a silent tantrum about not getting to attend Breyerfest this year. My family gave zero..... _______'s .... poor me. I know, right?! But I'm going next year sooo...BREYERFEST 2025 FOR THE WIN! Yayyy!
I had a very productive summer, implementing the theory and skills learned from some of our hobby greats this spring; from Karen Beeson's Dapple Grey painting class, to Lynn Fraley's Wire to Whinny workshop in Santa Fe at Bluebird Studios, to Heather Bullach's class on chestnuts and bays.... it was a spring and early summer of learning from these amazing women! I spent the rest of the summer quietly chugging away the chaos train that is my studio, working on finishing projects and starting a few new, exciting ones. The cherry on top is the original sculpture I have been working on and am looking forward to revealing, but he has a ways to go so more about him later... OH! And looking toward Fall, I will be attending the Canyons & Caballos Live Show at Griffith Park in Los Angeles in October! I am always super excited to meet hobby people who I've only seen online for so many years, so I'll look forward to meeting you there, if you're attending!
IN THE STUDIO...
NEW SCULPTURE IN THE WORKS!!!
I am so excited to be sharing this boy with you all! He isn't quite ready for casting yet, as you can see, but he is making great progress and I hope to be casting him soon! This bit of Spanish baroque goodness started out as a "Wire to Whinny" workshop project at Bluebird Studios, in Santa Fe, NM, taught by the amazing Lynn Fraley. He has changed so much since then! He could be just about any Spanish breed, and I can just imagine him in all the pretty horsey colors <3
Stromness (Eva Rositter, Rhytherial Studios) is alllllmost done! I had planned to sell her this summer, but I think I will hold off until next summer. I am hoping to take her to Nationals before offering her for sale. If I get an offer I can't refuse, though, from a very involved show home...I'm keeping an open mind! She just needs a little fiddling with her dappling on her underbelly and her hooves. I will be updating her photos with professional studio shots soon, so stay tuned!
La Llorona is *complete*! She is Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig's "Bitten by the Bug" medallion that I painted which was featured in Sarah's Newsletter September, 2023! I was still working on tiny fidgety details at that time, and her back side mural, so I took my time with her. I painted her to a buttery, warm red dun with attention to all her wonderful fleshy details. She has a canyon sunset mural painted on the back side. I gave her a working name; "La Llorona" after the Mexican mythological spirit of a woman scorned. Doesn't she look like she would eat little 4-H kids for breakfast? Llorona is available for sale. I am asking $300 USD PPD. (*Buyer is welcome to change her name, if they prefer*)
Brandebun Brandebun (Stacey Tumlinson) is such a sweet little ball of pudge! And....she's DONE! I'm sooo thrilled to be saying I am finally done futzing with all her details and adding her to the "Finish Line" list! She needs her studio shots added to the website, which I will be doing shortly. Watch for her at the "Canyons & Caballos" live show this October! Brandebun will be offered for sale following the show.
Benedek This stallion is SO full of himself! Benedek is my favorite curio scale sculpt by Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig...she has a way of breathing fire into her pieces, doesn't she? And Benedek (who I've nicknamed "Purple Purple" due to all the gorgeous purply-undertones in his paint job). He has blended dappling, hair-by-hair work on his multi-shaded whites, detailed eyes and hooves such as you would see on a traditional-scaled piece, and multi-shaded mane/detail. He has had some adjustments on his mane tips since these photos were taken, and I'm working on updating them but my camera isn't cooperating, so I will provide iPhone photos until then upon request. And with that, Benedek has now joined the "Finish Line" list! I will be showing him at "Canyons & Caballos" this October, and then he will be offered for sale.
I love Morgen Killbourne's work, especially "Pocket Change"! The way she captured the fleshy musculature and fascia on this guy! Just an awesome sculpt! He is in classic scale. He is in the process of becoming a subtly shaded/highlited chestnut "Happy Appy", in oils, with blue eyes and a hair-by-hair, big-spot blanket! He will be available for sale after this Fall's "Canyons & Caballos" show.
Meet "Derp"! Looking for that stoic drafter that's going to pull carriages with class for you, or logs with elegant strength? Yeahhhh, Derp's not that horse. Sorry. Derp is actually that horse that has cast himself on the fence...again...and licks other horses, on their faces...and scared himself into a tree, because he farted? Derp is THAT horse. We've all had a complete goober of a horse we've known and loved, and Derp is the embodiment of that goober! He has a new mane & tail, and just needs feathering completed, and it will be on to Phase 2 - Prepping, for this silly drafter. He has a surprise that I will reveal when he's complete. I plan to show him prior to selling, and am thinking about taking him to Nationals at Breyerfest 2025. Let's see what happens!
The "Back Burner Club".....
Meet "Superman". Superman is actually moving out of the Back Burner Club as I am actively working to rebuild his mane and tail, so yayyyy! I have no idea which way I'm going to go on his color...there are so many options! I plan to take this guy to Nationals, assuming he qualifies, and he will be offered afterward, but again, I'm keeping an open mind to offers from an active show home. I do not have upload-worthy, current images as of yet on this guy, but you can get an idea of what he's all about from these images (all I'm changing are his mane and tail...the old work is to the left, and removal of old work to the right). And that's it for now, folks! As I'm currently writing, I have a dying laptop and photo sessions that need to happen, and studio work awaiting, so I will get to it and return with a *proper* update ASAP! Thanks for visiting my virtual studio! I love sharing my passion for the hobby with you all! See you at Canyons & Caballos in October!
